BLAZERS BACK AT IT:? The UAB Blazer Football team was back on the practice field Friday after missing a day when Thursday's workout was rained out.?? UAB worked for just over two hours in shorts and helmets, trying to correct some of the mistakes made in Wednesday's practice.
"Today was a lot better, but what we did after the first day was take the same practice and repeated it," said UAB Head Coach Watson Brown following Friday's practice.
"We didn't put anything new in, we just repeated the same things on Wednesday, so it should have been better.? It's a little slow because of the no-huddle stuff, but the defense has to react to it just like the offense.? I think it's going well, although it looks a little sloppy right now."
CONDITIONS IMPROVING:? The UAB practice field was once again soggy on Friday, with numerous slips and slides by players on both sides of the ball during drills, but with temperatures in the 60s, things were nowhere near as unpleasant as they were Wednesday when players, coaches and support staff braved temperatures in the high 40s with intermittent rain and even a few snow flurries.?
NEW OFFENSE, cont.: Brown was encouraged by the offensive units' continued improvement in assimilating the team's "no-huddle" offense, which requires numerous reads and adjustments at the line of scrimmage on every down.?
"It was a lot better today than the first day," he said.?
"Once the ball is snapped, it's really a lot of the same plays that we always run, but the style is different and we're having to learn that tempo."
FULL PADS ON MONDAY:? The Blazers will have Saturday and Sunday off before working in full gear for the first time on Monday.?
"I think we will learn more about some of these young kids when we go to pads," said Brown.
"We've got a lot of redshirt freshmen out here that have not played, so it will be fun to watch some of them really strap it up for the first time and not be playing on a scout team.? I'm anxious to see how they handle it."
Monday's practice is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
NEXT WEEK:? UAB will practice Monday through Thursday (3:00 pm) and then hold its first scrimmage of the spring on Friday, Apr. 6 (10:00 am).
