BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through a two-and-a-half hour practice here Wednesday and head coach Neil Callaway called the workout his team's most spirited one of the spring.
"I think, by far, today was the most competitive practice we've had," Callaway said of his team's fifth practice of the spring. "We did a couple of different drills early and had some scrimmage situations. We talked to them (players) and told them we thought we had a lot of guys just going through the motions and I do think they picked it up some after that."
The Blazers, who will culminate their 2007 spring drills on Saturday, April 14 with their Spring Game, will hold a light workout on Friday before coming back this Saturday for the team's first scrimmage of the spring.
"I just thought everybody gave a lot more effort today from the start of practice," said Callaway.
The head coach said his team still has a long way to go to get where he wants the Blazers to be physically. "We're a long ways from where we need to be," Callaway said. "A lot of the drills we are doing are competitive drills. There's a lot of one-on-one, three-on-threes. We're running a lot of inside run drills to emphasize the physical part of the game.
"There's that fine line," he said. "We want to do enough to get them better and get them good at it, but we have to be smart not to do too much so that we don't have enough bodies to practice."
