BIRMINGHAM - A date with the Florida State Seminoles and four home conference USA games are among the highlights of the 2001 UAB football schedule, released today.
The Blazers, who are no stranger to road games with top-ranked opponents, having played at Nebraska (1998), at Tennessee (1998), and at Virginia Tech twice (1997, 1999), will meet the perennial power Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday, Sep. 8. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.
UAB will open the season at home for the second straight season (after four previous road openers, 1996-99), hosting Montana State on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Legion Field. Following the trip to Tallahassee, the Blazers will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers on Sep. 15. Both
Montana State and Pittsburgh will be first-time opponents for UAB. The Blazers will also play a non-conference game at Central Florida on Oct. 6.
The Blazers open Conference USA play at home on Sep. 22, hosting the Cadets of Army. UAB will also have home league games vs. Cincinnati (Oct. 13), Tulane (Sep. 20) and new C-USA member TCU (Nov. 10).
UAB will face three C-USA opponents on the road, beginning with Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on Sep. 29. The Blazers will also play at Memphis (Oct. 27) and close the regular season at Houston (Nov. 17).
