UAB opens the season Aug. 31 with a non-conference game at Troy.
Feb. 1, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The 2013 UAB football schedule includes Conference USA games against four new league members, back-to-back home contests to conclude the regular season, as well as a non-conference slate that features matchups against a pair of SEC teams that played in bowl games last year.
Of the Blazers' eight C-USA games that were announced in the schedule released by the league office this week, only three (Southern Miss, East Carolina and Marshall) of those will be against conference foes they played in 2012.
UAB will play first-time games -- both on the road -- against FIU (Oct. 12) and UTSA (Oct. 26). The Blazers have played Middle Tennessee and FAU previously, but the 2013 pairings will be the first games against the Blue Raiders and Owls as fellow conference members.
UAB will open the 2013 season with a road game at Troy on Aug. 31 to play the Trojans in the 11th meeting between the schools. A week later, the Blazers will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to take on the LSU Tigers. The contest at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 7 will come 13 years after UAB defeated LSU (13-10) during the 2000 season.
After an open date, the Blazers will play their 2013 home opener, taking on Northwestern (La.) State at Legion Field. UAB wraps up its non-conference schedule on Sept. 28 with a trip to Nashville, Tenn. to meet the Vanderbilt Commodores.
UAB begins conference play the first weekend in October with a home game Oct. 5 against FAU. The Blazers and Owls met four times during a four-year period (2008-11).
UAB will play at FIU on Oct. 12 and then have its second open date of the season.
The Blazers resume play on Oct. 26 with a road game at UTSA followed by a home contest against Middle Tennessee on Nov. 2. UAB and MTSU have played three times previously with the Blazers winning twice. UAB defeated the Blue Raiders, 14-9, in their most recent game in 2000.
The Blazers will face a pair of familiar foes Nov. 9 and 16 when they play road contests at Marshall and East Carolina, respectively. UAB defeated the Thundering Herd, 38-31, last season in Birmingham. The Pirates lead the series with the Blazers, 8-4, after winning the last six matchups.
The 2013 C-USA alignment will feature seven teams in both the East and West Divisions. East Carolina, FAU, FIU, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and UAB comprise the East Division, while Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, UTEP and UTSA make up the West Division.
Each school will play every team in its division once for six games, while playing two cross-over opponents from the opposite division. The 2013 schedule has 14 playing weeks, which provides for two open dates for each team. The schedule is a one-year model, meaning that as the conference lineup changes for the 2014 season, opponents may change and locations of games for that season are not yet determined.
A schedule of televised games will be released at a later date. Conference USA's national television partners are Fox Sports Media Group and CBS Sports Network for regular season contests. The league's ninth annual Championship Game, pitting the champions of the East and West Divisions, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 and will be televised by ESPN or ESPN 2.
Please note that all games are subject to date changes.
