BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- ----- Rice's Luke Turner scored on a 1-yard in overtime Thursday to lift the Owls to a 37-34 Conference USA victory over UAB at Legion Field.
The Blazers (2-9, 1-6 C-USA) had taken a 34-31 lead earlier in the extra period on a 43-yard field goal by kicker Ty Long. Long had sent the game into overtime with :37 left in regulation with a 24-yarder. UAB scored 13 straight points in the fourth quarter to erase a 31-21 deficit.
Rice (8-3, 6-1 C-USA) led by as many as 10 points on three different occasions, but UAB kept battling back. After trailing 17-7 at halftime, the Blazers outscored the Owls 24-14 in the second half. UAB gained 248 yards in the second half after gaining only 85 in the first two periods.
UAB running back Darrin Reaves scored a pair of 1-yard rushing touchdowns, his 10th and 11tht on the season, and the 25th and 26th of his career. Quarterback Jonathan Perry passed for 195 yards and one touchdown, hitting Darius Powell for a 20-yard touchdown with 3:37 left in the game.
Jowan Davis ran for 130 yards and a touchdown for Rice and also had a key 17-yard run in overtime that set up the game-winning score in overtime.
Owls' quarterback Taylor McGargue passed for 139 yards and a pair of scored and also ran for 92 yards.
UAB will close out its 2013 season on Saturday, Nov. 30 when the Blazers play host to Southern Miss in a Noon CST kickoff at Legion Field.
