GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Jonathan Perry threw for 210 yards for UAB (2-8, 1-5) and rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. It wasn't enough to come back to East Carolina's Shane Carden, who threw five touchdowns to lead the Pirates to a 63-14 victory on Saturday.
Perry and UAB running back Darrin Reaves each rushed for touchdowns on the day. Reaves' touchdown rush was the 24th of his career and ties him with former Blazer Joe Webb for third all-time in career rushing touchdowns.
Wide receiver Jamari Staples returned to action for the Blazers after missing the last two games with a foot injury. Staples finished with five receptions Saturday for 78 yards. Staples has now had three or more receptions in five games this season.
ECU's Carden was 20 of 30 for 296 yards. The running game for the Pirates (8-2, 6-1) was even more impressive as Breon Allen and Vintavious Cooper each rushed for over 100 yards.
The Pirates scored five touchdowns in the first half for a 35-7 halftime lead. They converted 8 of 10 possessions into touchdowns overall, punting only once but turning the ball over twice on a pair of Carden interceptions.
Next up, UAB hosts Rice on Thursday in a game that will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT at Legion Field.
