GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Rhett Gallego kicked three field goals, including a 44-yarder late in the fourth quarter, as UAB beat East Carolina 16-13 on Saturday.

The Blazers' second-ranked defense took control late in the fourth quarter. UAB (6-2, 2-2 Conference USA) pinned the Pirates (5-3, 3-2) deep in their own territory, forcing Kevin Miller to punt from his own end zone.

Miller's punt went 25 yards, giving the Blazers possession at the ECU 33. Three plays later, Gallego kicked a 44-yard field goal with 2:24 to play, giving UAB a 16-13 edge.

The Pirates turned the ball over on downs on the next possession. They got the ball back with less than a minute to play, but couldn't get within field-goal range.

The Pirates trailed 6-3 at halftime but tied the game on Miller's 22-yard field goal with 5:35 to play in the third period.

After the Blazers went three-and-out, East Carolina struck again. David Garrard, who finished with 253 passing yards, found Jamie Wilson on a 3-yard pass to give ECU a 13-6 lead with 2:26 left in the period.

The Blazers tied it at 13 on a 28-yard pass from Jeff Aaron to T.J. Simmons with five seconds left in the quarter.

The Pirates rushed for 71 yards in the first half against the Blazers, who came into the game allowing 77.6 yards per contest.

East Carolina took a 3-0 lead on its second possession on Miller's 37-yard field goal.

Gallego hit a 38-yard field goal early in the second period, and added a 31-yarder with 2:49 to play in the half.

The Pirates also failed to avenge last year's 36-17 loss to the Blazers, in which ECU committed three second-half turnovers and finished with 9 rushing yards.
