SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AP)- UAB outscored UTSA over the final three quarters Saturday, but it was a slow start by the Blazers that made the difference at the Alamodome as the Roadrunners claimed the Conference USA victory, 52-31.
Saturday's meeting was the first between the two schools. UTSA is in its first year as a C-USA member. UTSA quarterback Eric Soza threw to 11 different receivers for a total of 235 yards and two touchdowns to lead an offense that totaled 523 yards. The Blazers nearly matched the Roadrunners in yardage, tallying 506 yards.
Jonathan Perry came off the bench for UAB (2-5, 1-2 C-USA) to throw for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running for 60 more yards. Perry connected with Darrin Reaves for a 21-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter and then hit wide receiver Jamarcus Nelson for a 28-yard score in the fourth period.
Nelson, who finished with 101 receiving yards on five catches, was playing for the first time since the Sept. 28 contest at Vanderbilt due to injury.
Soza, who also rushed for 48 yards, led UTSA (3-5, 2-2 C-USA) to a 24-0 advantage in the first quarter. The Roadrunners scored on their first five possessions to take a 38-10 lead at halftime. UTSA had 183 yards and 11 first downs in the first quarter alone.
Brandon Armstrong, who rushed for 54 yards on four carries, got UTSA on the board with a 22-yard run. Armstrong also hauled in a 51-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Evans Okotcha scored from 10 yards out to stretch the lead to 45-10 in the third quarter.
Reaves scored a pair of touchdowns for UAB, adding an 18-yard scoring run for the final points of the game with just 3:08 remaining. The touchdown was the 21st on the ground of Reaves' career.
Kicker Ty Long booted a 50-yard field goal, the fourth career field goal of 50 yards or more for the Blazer junior, for UAB's first points of the game.
UAB will return home next Saturday, Nov. 2 when the Blazers play host to Middle Tennessee at Legion Field in their 2013 Homecoming. Kickoff will be at 12:00 p.m. CT as the game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
