BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Jaquez Johnson totaled a career-high 404 yards of total offense and accounted for three touchdowns to lead Florida Atlantic to a 37-23 win over UAB Saturday at Legion Field.
FAU (2-4, 1-3 Conference USA) converted 11 of 17 third down opportunities while racking up 579 yards of total offense and outscored UAB (1-4, 0-1) 20-3 in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead into the halftime break.
The Blazers' Austin Brown, who finished the game with 256 yards passing and two touchdowns, found Jamari Staples for a 29-yard score to cap an 8-play, 75 yard scoring drive to open the third quarter. The touchdown reception was the fourth in five games this season for the true freshman Staples.
Running back Darrin Reaves was UAB's leading receiver in the game as he finished with five catches for 82 yards.
Nearly five minutes later, Ty Long's 30-yard field goal knotted the game at 23 apiece. Long was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon and extended his streak to 27-of-27 for field goals of 40 yards or less during his career at UAB. Long also is now tied for third all-time on the Blazers' kicking charts with 39.
The Owls responded immediately, marching 75 yards in just five plays to take the lead for good as Jonathan Wallace's 53-yard run set up Jay Warren's touchdown run from 3 yards out.
UAB blocked three kicks in the game, one on a field goal attempt and a pair on extra point tries.
UAB will continue Conference USA play next weekend when the Blazers play at FIU on Oct. 12 (6:30 p.m., CSS).
