UAB (2-1) appeared to have the game in hand when White scored on a 1-yard run to give the Blazers a 35-14 lead with 7:44 to play. But I-AA Jacksonville State (0-3) came back to leave the outcome in doubt until the final minutes.
A pair of scoring passes from Maurice Mullins to Tauren Rhetta pulled the Gamecocks within 7 with less than a minute to play. The Gamecocks appeared to recover the onside kick, but were penalized for touching the ball before it had gone 10 yards. UAB took over at the Jacksonville State 41-yard line and ran out the clock.
UAB led 21-7 at halftime and twice looked like it might pull away in the 2nd half. But Jacksonville State kept fighting back.
A 1-yard touchdown run by White gave the Blazers a 28-7 lead with 1:53 left in the third quarter. The score came after a 19-yard punt by Jacksonville State's Zach Walden gave UAB the ball at the Gamecock's 33 yard line. A 19-yard pass from Hackney to Reggie Lindsey set up White's scoring run.
Jacksonville State drove 77 yards to score on a 5-yard run by Clay Green with 12:53 left in the game. A 46-yard run by Green on an option play was the key play in the drive.
Jacksonville State tried an onside kick, but UAB recovered at the Gamecock's 44. Hackney led UAB on an 11-play scoring drive that ended with another 1-yard scoring run by White.
Jacksonville State then drove 77 yards in 7 plays to score on a 27-yard pass from Mullins to Rhetta.
UAB failed to move the ball on its next possession and was forced to punt. The snap went over punter Parker Mullins' head. Mullins managed to scoop up the ball and get off a kick under pressure, but it went out of bounds and resulted in a 12-yard loss, giving Jacksonville State the ball at UAB's 33.
Hackney completed 16-of-24 passes for 231 yards and 2 touchdowns.
For Jacksonville State, Mullins completed 21-29 passed for 259 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rhetta had 8 catches for 129 yards and Green ran for 74 yards on 11 carries.
