BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's basketball team will return to the hardwood when it takes on in-state foe Alabama A&M on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT. The Blazers and Bulldogs are meeting for the sixth time in the series history, with the Green and Gold capturing wins in each of the previous five contests.
The Blazers are on a four-game winning streak, the best win streak in the Mike Davis era. Tuesday night's game against Alabama A&M will concludes a stretch of playing four of five contests in the friendly confines of Bartow Arena. The Green and Gold are 4-0 in the stretch following a 73-54 victory over Cincinnati last Saturday. Following this span of games, the Blazers will end the month of December with games at USF (12/8), at Kentucky (12/15) and at Wichita State (12/22), before coming home to end 2007 against Old Dominion (12/29).
Huffman Getting Hot
Junior forward Reggie Huffman is ranked third in the country in field goal percentage entering the Alabama A&M contest, according to the latest national rankings by ESPN.com. Huffman has connected on 46-of-59 shots for 78.0-percent shooting from the floor. Ironically, Huffman is not the best percentage shooter in Conference USA. Tulane's Robert Louisme is second in the country and leads C-USA, shooting 80.6 percent (25-of-31) this season.
Awesome AJ
There is no doubt that the season-ending injury to UAB senior guard Paul Delaney III was a blow to the team. However, the Blazers have pulled together as a unit. UAB enters the Alabama A&M game having won four consecutive games without its captain, and have captured victories in four of the five contests Delaney has missed since the injury.
Overtime Enjoyment
The Blazers captured a 78-72 overtime victory at Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 27. When the Blazers go to an extra period during the Mike Davis era, it usually has meant good things. UAB is now 4-1 in the five overtime games under Davis. Of the five overtime games during Davis' two seasons, last Tuesday's was the first overtime win on the road. In fact, the six-point victory over the Ragin' Cajuns was the first road victory since an 88-85 win at TCU on Feb. 18, 2003. In fact, dating back to his six-year coaching tenure at Indiana, Davis has done extremely well in overtime contests, compiling a career record of 10-3 in such games.
