BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB will play in the 2013 Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant, ESPN Regional Television announced Friday.
The Blazers are one of six teams confirmed for the eight-team field. The event will be held next November at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.
Dates for the tournament will be announced at a later date.
In addition to UAB, the other teams participating in the sixth annual event will include Clemson, Georgia, Nebraska, New Mexico and Temple.
The Blazers have played all but one (New Mexico) of the teams listed thus far in the field. UAB played Clemson most recently (2011 NCAA Tournament) and is 2-1 all-time against the Tigers. The Blazers are 1-3 against Georgia with the last meeting in Athens in 2010; 2-2 versus Nebraska, having played the Cornhuskers at Lincoln in 2006 in the last meeting; and 1-2 against Temple with the last matchup in 1993 at Philadelphia.
A seventh and eighth team will be announced later.
The 2013 Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant will feature a bracket format with 12 games over three days. Each team will compete in one contest per day, advancing through the bracket. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on the final day of competition.
The Southern Conference (SoCon) will again serve as the event's sponsoring conference, marking its sixth straight year.
Past winners of the Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant are Northwestern, Georgetown, Miami (Fla.) and Clemson.
This family-friendly tournament offers the teams a week of practice, play and experiences in and around historic Charleston.
