BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - After almost a month of practice, the UAB Blazers will get their first test of action against outside opposition Thursday in a 7 p.m. contest against the Double Pump Southeast All-Stars at Bartow Arena.
UAB head coach Murry Bartow begins his fifth season at the helm of the Blazer program and is likely to start senior LeAndrew Bass (Birmingham, Ala.) at one guard and sophomore Tony Johnson (Morganfield, Ky.) at the other. At forward, UAB is expected to start senior David Walker (Springfield, Tenn.), junior Eric Batchelor (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior Will Campbell (Elmira, N.Y.).
The Blazers play a Southeast All-Star Team that has compiled an 0-6 mark on their exhibition tour (prior to Wednesday night's game at Murray State) with losses at Cincinnati, Louisville, Xavier, Kentucky, Western Kentucky and Vanderbilt.
The team features former Michigan standout Rumeal Robinson, who has compiled 14.8 points per game average, along with 3.0 rebounds a contest. Curtis Staples, a former University of Virginia product, leads the team in scoring average with a 18.8 points per game average.
The game is the first of two exhibitions for the Blazers before they open the regular season at home Nov. 21 against Alabama A&M. The other exhibition contest is slated for next Wednesday against Marathon Oil. Game time for that affair is set for 7 p.m.
