Head coach Jerod Haase invites fans to join him for the second Hoops on the Haasephalt.
Sept. 12, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Head coach Jerod Haase and the UAB men's basketball team will open the 2013-14 season in grand fashion with the second annual Hoops on the Haasephalt set for Friday, Oct. 4.
The event, which will feature even more activities in its second year, will again take place on an outdoor basketball court. The court will be erected in the Lot 15A parking lot on UAB's campus in front of the Bell and Ullman buildings.
This year's Hoops on the Haasephalt will feature activities for all ages, including a Kids' Zone with inflatables for children, games and prizes for UAB students as well as autograph sessions with the Blazers' men's and women's basketball teams. Both men's and women's hoops squads, as well as men's soccer and softball, will also be competing in a battle of the sexes dance competition choreographed by the UAB cheerleaders and Golden Girls.
Food trucks from Full Moon BBQ, as well as The Cantina Mexican Restaurant, will be at the event, offering free food for UAB students. The UAB SAAC will also be hosting a can food drive and encourages fans to bring cans with them.
Last year, over 2,600 people were in attendance for the first Hoops on the Haasephalt as people from Birmingham and surrounding areas witnessed a one-of-a-kind event. Haase, along with UAB athletic department officials, have worked to offer even more fun and activities for families, UAB students and local residents this year.
"Even though we had a great event last year, we came into this season's Hoops on the Haasephalt with the goal of making this the premiere tip-off event in college basketball," Haase said. "We have a lot of special activities planned for children, families, students and citizens of Birmingham, so I encourage everyone to come out, and make this a special night for UAB basketball, our city and our state."
All the action will begin at approximately 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 with a youth basketball game, followed by a wheelchair basketball exhibition from the Lakeshore Foundation at 6:15 p.m. The main event will get under way at 7 p.m. and promises to be a great show for fans in attendance.
The 7 p.m. event will feature a half-court shot for tuition for one lucky UAB student as well as a 3-point competition and dunk contest. Haase will also make a grand entrance to the main event and will introduce the 2013-14 UAB men's basketball team. Haase will be joined by UAB women's basketball head coach Randy Norton, who will also introduce his squad.
