BARCELONA, Spain – A 13-0 run to start the second half propelled the UAB men’s basketball team to a 70-67 win against Spanish professional team Basquet Torrejon on Thursday.
With the victory, UAB finishes its Spain tour with a 2-1 record and wins against two professional squads.
“Today, I thought our guys competed hard but I think we leave Spain with a ton of positives and also some negatives,” head coach Jerod Haase said. “I am excited that our guys got this experience with all three games being close. We were able to get a lot out of our team, and we are very excited about what we were able to accomplish this week.”
UAB struggled in the first half of Thursday’s game. The Blazers fell victim to an 11-2 run in the second quarter and fell behind 39-32 going into the half.
The Blazers responded in the opening minutes of the third quarter, going on a 13-0 run to begin the frame and stake claim to a 45-39 advantage. UAB stayed in control the rest of the way en route to the 70-67 win.
C.J. Washington led the Blazers in scoring with 26 points to go along with 11 rebounds on the day. Meanwhile, sophomore Tyler Madison capped off his impressive week in Spain with 13 points to go along with nine boards.
“We came into this trip with a young team and a group that we have not seen much in a UAB uniform,” Haase said. “I feel like this trip gave us an opportunity to see those guys and to evaluate them going forward.”
