It's easy to tell the summer is over around the athletics department these days. There are more cars in the parking lot (love having the students back...sorta). There are more cars in the parking lot later in the evening. The more relaxed pace we get to enjoy during the summer months has totally vanished, and quite suddenly, I might add. Student-athletes are walking around in their practice gear. You can hear the Marching Blazers practicing off in the distance. Oh, and Fan Day is tomorrow!
"Breakfast with the Blazers" is just the start of a busy, busy weekend for the Green and Gold, and not just the football team. Fans can come have breakfast at Bartow Arena, served again by the coaching staff, starting at 9 AM, then at 10 AM they can get autographs from the players, coaches and even the radio crew (Be sure to say hello to our new sideline reporter, former UAB defensive lineman Otis Leverette). At 11 AM, some members of the football team will stick around and face the UAB volleyball team in a little exhibition on the floor at Bartow Arena. Breakfast is free for all UAB football season ticket holders and students; $5 for all other guests.
After the Fan Day festivities wrap up, coach Callaway will take this squad to Legion Field for a closed scrimmage in the afternoon. The radio crew will be in attendance...checking the equipment...and basically "playing radio" for a little while to make sure we all remember how to call a football game!
Later tomorrow afternoon, soccer fans of all ages will be in for a real treat. The UAB men's team will be offering a free clinic to kids of all ages from 4:30-6:30 PM at West Campus Field. Following the clinic, the Blazers will play their first exhibition match of the season. The Clemson Tigers will be in town, and the match is set to begin at 7 PM...a marquee match-up, to say the least.
Then on Sunday, the UAB women's soccer team will play its first home match of the regular season. Coach Paul Harbin's team will open the season tonight (Friday) just down the road at Alabama. The Blazers will face their second SEC team of the year on Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field when the Ole Miss Rebels pay a visit. Match time is 2 PM, and it will also be Military Appreciation Day. All military members will gain free admission by showing their military ID. Tickets will be $5 for adults, $3 for youth under the age of 18, and all UAB students will be admitted free with their student ID.
After dealing with heavy rains this week (and last year on Fan Day), it looks like the weather will be absolutely perfect this weekend, so get out and enjoy! We'll see you tomorrow morning for "Breakfast with the Blazers"...tomorrow night for the men's soccer exhibition...and Sunday for the women's soccer home-opener against Ole Miss.
Have a great weekend, and GO BLAZERS!!!
