BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Home games with perennial power North Carolina and future Big Ten Conference member Rutgers, along with a road contest at SEC foe LSU and three games against a talented field in the Charleston Classic highlight the 2013-14 UAB men's basketball non-conference schedule, Blazers' head coach Jerod Haase announced on Thursday.
The Blazers will compete in a total of 14 non-conference games plus an exhibition contest prior to the start of Conference USA play. Nine of those games will take place at Bartow Arena, where UAB finished with an 11-4 record a season ago in Haase's first year in Birmingham.
"With the schedule we were looking for a big-time schedule and a home schedule that has some big games that the fans can get excited about." Haase said. "We also looked for a balance of the schedule with both home and road games, and a balance with a variety of opponents and I think we've achieved that.
"Needless to say we have some big-time names and some big-time competition with North Carolina and Rutgers, the Charleston Classic and on the road at LSU. So there a lot of good names that people are going to recognize and I think that will be great for UAB basketball."
The marquee home contest on the non-conference slate is set for Sunday, Dec. 1, when the five-time NCAA National Champion North Carolina Tar Heels come to Bartow Arena. The matchup will feature a pair of head coaches very familiar with each other, as Haase both played and coached under UNC legendary head man Roy Williams.
"Playing North Carolina will be special through the relationships I've built with past and present players that I know really well still and it will be exciting to have them in Bartow Arena," Haase said. "The game will be a big deal and it will get the city of Birmingham and the students really excited which will be great for our program."
The tilt with the Tar Heels will mark the second time the two programs have met in Bartow Arena, with the other coming during the 2010 season when UNC narrowly defeated the Blazers in the NIT Quarterfinals.
Other key games for the Blazers include hosting Rutgers on Monday, Nov. 11 in the Scarlet Knights' first trip to Birmingham along with a road trip to LSU on Dec. 21. The Tigers will complete the home-and-home series in the 2014-15 season with a trip to Bartow Arena. The matchup with the Tigers will be only the third meeting ever between the two schools, with the last coming in the 2005 NCAA Tournament when the 11th-seeded Blazers upset No. 6 seed LSU, 82-68, in Boise, Idaho.
The Blazers will also compete in a star-studded field at the Charleston Classic, to be held in Charleston, S.C. at the TD Arena from Nov. 21-24. The tournament bracket, which is still to be announced, will feature Clemson, Davidson, Georgia, Nebraska, New Mexico, Temple and UMass, in addition to UAB. Six of the seven possible tournament opponents finished in the top 150 of the RPI last season, with the Lobos ending the 2012-13 campaign ranked third.
"Preseason tournaments are good for our program and good for our student-athletes to see a new place and experience new things and play against some big-time competition," Haase said. "Charleston is a great city and it is a big-time tournament we will compete in. The competition is going to be special and we are going to have to be playing well early in the season to be able to compete."
UAB starts the year with an exhibition game against Milligan College on Nov. 3 and welcomes Columbus State for the season opener on Nov. 8 prior to hosting Rutgers and in-state foe Troy (Nov. 14).
Following the early-season, four-game homestand and the Charleston event, the Blazers will return home to host six of their final eight non-conference opponents, starting with Florida A&M on Nov. 27.
After entertaining the Tar Heels on Dec. 1, the Blazers will travel to Boston, Mass., to play Northeastern on Dec. 7. The Huskies advanced to the NIT last season, capturing the CAA Championship in the regular season.
UAB returns home to host Georgia Southern (Dec. 15) and Chattanooga (Dec. 18) before trekking to LSU on Dec. 21 just before the holiday season.
The Blazers get their final tune-ups prior to the beginning of league play with two more home games to close out the non-conference schedule against Alabama A&M (Dec. 29) and Newberry College (Jan. 4).
