BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Hakeem Baxter, a 2014 All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie Team selection, will transfer from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and join the UAB men's basketball team, head coach Jerod Haase announced on Friday.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, the 6-foot-2, 170 pound guard will sit out the upcoming 2014-15 season and will be eligible to play for the Blazers beginning in the 2015-16 season, with three years of eligibility remaining.
"Hakeem is a great pick up for our team," Haase said. "He did an outstanding job during his first season at Maryland Eastern Shore and is a talented and dynamic guard who we can bring in and develop over the next year."
Baxter was a starting guard in each of the Hawks' 28 games last season and led UMES in scoring with 14.4 points per game. The Philadelphia, Pa., native scored in double figures 20 times last season and scored over 20 points on eight occasions. He was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week three times and was the Lindy's Sports MEAC Preseason Newcomer of the Year.
The highly-recruited guard went to UMES following an outstanding prep career at Philadelphia Electric and Technology Charter. Baxter was an All-Public League First Team selection as a senior and finished as the all-time leading scorer in PET Charter men's basketball history. Baxter was ranked as the No. 35 overall prospect in Pennsylvania by MaxPreps.com coming out of high school.
