BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB head coach Mike Davis announced Wednesday that Heath Gameren, a 6-6, 175-pound point guard out of Hartnell (Calif.) College, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Blazers.
"This is a great signing for us," Davis said. "Heath plays point guard but is capable of playing other positions for us. He has a very high basketball IQ and we are ecstatic to add someone of his stature on our team."
Gameren, a native of Brisbane, Australia, comes to UAB after starting all 30 games at Hartnell under head coach Andrew Vasher. Vasher thinks Gameren is going to thrive under the system Davis runs at UAB.
"Heath is a great player and an even better person," Vasher said. "He is the type of player who will make any team better with him on it. He can shoot the ball well and is a terrific passer. He is athletic and long and I think UAB fans are really going to enjoy watching him play."
Gameren played one season at Hartnell where he started all 30 contests on his way to earning California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) honorable mention accolades.
Starting the entire season at point guard, Gameren averaged 7.7 points, 6.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game. He finished the year ranking third in the CCCAA in assists and fourth in steals per game.
Gameren, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, becomes the second junior college player signed by the UAB in the 2009 class, joining Jamarr Sanders (Northwest Florida Community College). Other signees in this year's class include Adrien Coleman (Stone Mountain, Ga./Stephenson HS), Dexter Fields (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) and Robert Williams (Greenville, Miss./Weston HS).
