BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Robert Williams, regarded among the top prep prospects in the state of Mississippi, has signed a national letter of intent to attend UAB and continue his basketball career, according to an announcement Wednesday by Blazers head coach Mike Davis.
Williams, a 6-4, 200-pound guard, will come to UAB from Greenville, Miss. where he was a standout player at Weston High School. Under head coach Ernie Watson, Williams averaged 20.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game as a senior. He led his region in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots per game (1.5) on the year.
"We are excited to have Robert join the UAB program," Davis said. "Robert is a strong player who can really score the basketball. He is a very good rebounder, shot blocker and is very athletic. We look forward to Robert joining us and I think he can certainly make an impact for us next season."
Williams was selected to play in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game following the season. He was ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Class of 2009 by HoopScoop.com and No. 11 in the state by Rivals.com.
Williams joins Dexter Fields and Adrien Coleman, who signed with the Blazers last November, in the 2009 recruiting class.
Fields, a 6-2 190-pound shooting guard from Orlando, Fla., will come to UAB from Olympia High School where he was coached by Mark Griseck. During his junior season, Fields averaged 20.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. As a result, he was tabbed First-Team All-State by the Orlando Sentinel and helped lead his team to a 24-3 overall record.
He followed that season by averaging 17.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a senior. Following his senior season, Fields was tabbed First-Team All-Metro, All-Area and All-Central Florida by the Orlando Sentinel. Additionally, the most prolific scorer in Olympia history also earned a nod on the Florida All-Star team.
Coleman, a 6-4, 190-pound shooting guard hailing from Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Ga., is listed as a three-star prospect by both Rivals.com and Scout.com. Additionally, he was ranked as the No. 69 shooting guard in the nation by ESPN.com. During his junior season in 2007-08, Coleman led his team and ranked third in DeKalb County with an average of 22.2 points per game.
As a senior, Coleman was selected second-team All-State by the Georgia Sportswriters Association and received honorable mention all-state accolades by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Coleman had a terrific senior season, highlighted by earning MVP honors at the Capitol City Classic.
