TULSA, Okla. ---- By defeating SMU on Wednesday, the seventh-seeded UAB men's basketball team advanced to the Conference USA Tournament Quarterfinals to play No. 2 seed Southern Miss on Thursday at Noon CT. The contest will be televised by the CBS Sports Network.

Southern Miss swept the two-game season series with UAB. In the last meeting, the Golden Eagles edged the Blazers in Birmingham, despite UAB placing five players in double figures.

Blazers Survive & Advance
Seventh-seeded UAB led the entire game against No. 10 seed SMU until Brian Bernardi made a pair of free throws to give the Mustangs a 52-51 lead with 29 seconds remaining.
Jordan Swing, who finished with a game-high 17 points, put up a shot that was blocked, grabbed his own miss and put in a layup with nine seconds left for what proved to be the game winner.
SMU had a chance to win the game, but Robert Williams blocked Nick Russell's shot in the closing seconds to secure the 53-52 victory.
Finding A Way To Win
UAB shot just 35.4 percent in the victory against SMU, the third lowest shooting percentage in a win this season. Back on Nov. 20, UAB made only 33.3 percent (22-of-66) of its attempts vs. Prairie View A&M in a 76-70 win and shot just 30.2 percent (19-for-63) in a 52-48 win at Marshall (2/23).
UAB's 53 points were the second lowest in a win this year, with the other coming at Marshall on Feb. 23 (52 points).
Assist Streak Still Intact
In the one-point victory over SMU in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament, the Blazers tied a season-low with 10 assists on 17 made baskets, marking the 34th consecutive game with 10-or-more helpers in a game. The last time UAB was held to less than 10 assists was at UCF (3/3/12) last season in a 71-63 loss (8 assists).
Swiping Past SMU
UAB tied a season-high with 14 steals in the win over SMU on Wednesday. The Blazers collected 14 swipes on Nov. 20 in a 76-70 home victory vs. Prairie View A&M. On the season, UAB has posted 12 games with 10-plus steals and average 8.1 per game.
Shutting Down The ‘Stangs
In the first meeting against SMU, the Mustangs shot 57.7 percent. However, in Wednesday’s victory, UAB held SMU to just 28.6 percent (17-for-48) shooting – the third lowest by a Blazer opponent this season.
Blazers Struggle On TV
UAB is searching for its first victory when playing on television this season. The Blazers are 0-6 when their game is televised with two of the six losses coming to Southern Miss.
3-Point Barrage In Bartow
In the last meeting between UAB and Southern Miss, the two teams combined to make 22 3-pointers at Bartow Arena on February 2. The 12 3s tied a season-high and the 29 attempts were also the most by the Blazers this season. Southern Miss went 10-for-17 from beyond the arc, marking the best 3-point shooting percentage by a UAB opponent this season (58.8).
Overall, Southern Miss shot 63.8 percent (30-for-47) for the game, the top overall shooting percentage by a Blazer opponent on the year.
