Jordan Swing scored 19 points and Preston Purifoy hit a go-ahead jumper with 51 seconds remaining as UAB edged UTEP 61-60 Saturday night.

>> UAB enters Wednesday's game after dropping a road contest to Houston, 66-61, at Hofheinz Pavilion last Saturday.

>> In the loss, UAB stormed back in the second half, erasing a 13-point deficit, but the Cougars were able to pull away down the stretch.  Jordan Swing finished with 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists off the bench.

>> Terence Jones, who scored all 14 of his points after intermission, and Swing combined for 29 of UAB's 35 second half points.

>> The Blazers rank second in C-USA and 12th in the nation in assists per game, dishing out 16.5 per contest.  A total of five players have 30 or more assists for the season, led by Terence Jones with 82.

>> As a team, UAB is shooting 42.5 percent overall, 32.2 percent from 3-point range and 74.0 percent from the foul line.

>> Rod Rucker tops the Blazers in points (13.8) and rebounds (8.4) per game, along with totaling the most double-doubles on the UAB squad with eight.

>> Preston Purifoy ranks second in C-USA in free throw percentage (91.8), trailing only Houston's Joseph Young (93.2).  He has made 31 of his last 32 free throws at home in Bartow Arena.

On The Miners
>> UTEP enters Wednesday's tilt with a record of 11-7 and 4-1 in league play.  The Miners are coming off a thrilling 68-67 victory at East Carolina, won at the buzzer on a 3-pointer by McKenzie Moore.

>> The Miners average three players in double figures, led by Julian Washburn's per game average of 12.3.  Center John Bohannon has been a force in the paint for UTEP, averaging 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest.  Bohannon is coming off a 22-point outing against the ECU Pirates.

>> UTEP is averaging 63.4 points per game, but the Miner defense is holding the opposition to just 60.9 points off a shooting percentage of 41.2 percent.

>> As a team, the Miners are shooting 44.5 percent from the floor, 36.4 percent from 3-point range and 68.8 from the charity stripe.

Close Battles With Miners
UAB leads the all-time series with UTEP, 7-6, but the last three meetings have been decided by three points or less.  Last season, Preston Purifoy drained a jumper with 51 seconds left as the Blazers held on for a 61-60 victory in El Paso.

The last meeting between the two schools in Bartow Aren was an epic battle, lasting three overtimes, before the Blazers prevailed, 100-97.  Cameron Moore connected on a game-winning 3-pointer with two seconds left to give UAB the victory.

Swing Steps Up Off Bench
After starting the first 18 games of the season, Jordan Swing has come off the Blazer bench in each of the last two contests, vs. East Carolina and at Houston.  During those two games, Swing has been a spark off the bench, averaging 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game.  At Houston, Swing poured in 20 points, 15 in the second half and tied a career-high with seven assists.
