Senior guard P.J. Arnold led all scorers with 22 points and sophomore guard Asa Woods had 19 as UAB (3-4) defeated Alcorn State 102-61 Tuesday at Bartow Arena.
Arnold, who scored 15 points in the second half, tied his
career scoring high and hit six three-pointers as the Blazers equaled the UAB
single-game record with 14.
A total of seven UAB players scored in double figures,
including Arnold, Woods, Antonae Roberson
with 15 points, Eric Batchelor
and Jeffery Collins with 11
each, and Will Campbell and Mo
Finley with 10 each. Campbell had a
"double-double" in the game, leading UAB with 10 rebounds.
Brian Davis led
Alcorn State (1-4) with 19 points and nine rebounds, followed by
Marcus Fleming with 12.
Alcorn State jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the early going,
but UAB responded with a 10-0 run over a three-minute stretch, led by Roberson,
who scored four straight points and Woods and Collins, who each hit
three-pointers.
The Braves would battle back to tie the game at 21-21 with
9:41 remaining in the half, but UAB once again pulled away, this time with an
11-0 run over the next four minutes, sparked by Arnold, who scored all seven of
his first-half points during that stretch as the Blazers took a 32-21 lead with
5:36 to play.
The Blazers led 42-29 at the half.
The floodgates opened in the second half, as UAB steadily
built its lead, with the largest lead of the night - 41 points -
coming at the end, 102-61.
