Mike Anderson Postgame Quotes
UAB vs. UMass
Nov. 25, 2005 - Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic
On the game:
"I thought it was a well-played game. I thought both teams got after it. To some people, it probably looked kind of sloppy, but it's early in the year. There was some pretty intense basketball. I thought it was a gutsy performance by two teams. There was one team that wouldn't go away. We had a chance to really put them away and they didn't. That's a tribute to Travis - Coach Ford - and the players he has. "We were fortunate to come on the road and win, but we've got a veteran ball club. That's the biggest difference. When you look at the guys who made key plays for our basketball team - Demario Eddins, Squeaky Johnson - those guys have been with me since I've been at UAB. Needless to say, we're very happy with the win."
On the fact UMass tried to run with UAB:
"That's what Coach Ford does. He played that way. When I was at Arkansas, we played them (Kentucky) when he played for Coach (Rick) Pitino. I figured they would. One thing you can't do, you can't change in midstream. Running is something that we're pretty good at."
On the effectiveness of his press in the first half:
"I thought they came out and were probably ready for it at one time. Eventually, the pressure will get to you. We made some adjustments and our guys started deflecting some balls and getting in passing lanes. And we made a couple shots. They went to a zone and we hit a couple shots and I think right then we went on like an 11-0 or 11-2 spurt and we're a team about spurts. Sometimes you never know when it's going to happen, but it was that time for us and our guys really got after it on the defensive side of the ball."
On Wen Mukubu's first game for UAB:
On Squeaky Johnson saying Demario Eddins is the go-to guy for UAB:
"I thought he came out with a high level of energy. You could just see that he brings energy to our basketball team when he's out there. Sometimes you never know what he's going to do, but he's and exciting player. He's going to be one of those guys that is going to be in some highlights. My job is to get him to become one of those blue collar guys, like Squeaky Johnson out there - everywhere on the floor. He has that ability and I'm sure he's excited about playing basketball.
"I think (the players) know. Squeaky is like a coach on the floor. Those guys are going to make plays. Squeaky, Demario, as well as a guy like Marvett (McDonald), those are going to be some guys who make key plays. Then you look on the defensive side and I thought one of the key plays of the game was Paul Delaney
in digging out a rebound and kicks it down the floor for a layup. That was when the game was a three or four point game. It's going to be somebody every night. You look at the scoring (today) and it was Demario's night. It could be Marvett in the next game and in fact, starting off the game, you would have thought it was going to be Marvett.
Senior Forward Demario Eddins
On the game and his MVP performance:
"Squeaky is our leader on the floor. He tells me where to go and I just try to be there. Coach just tells us to get open for him. When somebody needs some help, try to get open. That's the way we're going to try to play the rest of the season.
"The MVP is nice, but this is a win first. It doesn't mean anything without the `W' so I'm happy we're 1-0 right now."
Senior Guard Squeaky Johnson
On Demario's performance:
"That's our go-to guy. Coach says we have 10 starters, but everybody knows when it gets down to the line, the ball goes to Demario. He's got that ability to get fouled and make free-throws down the stretch."
