EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Four Charlotte men's basketball players scored in double figures to help the 49ers to an 80-70 win against UAB in the second round of the Conference USA Championship on Wednesday.
The victory over eight-seeded UAB (18-13) sends ninth-seeded Charlotte (17-13) to the Conference USA quarterfinal tournament game against No. 1 seed Louisiana Tech (25-6) on Thursday.
"I thought Charlotte played a very good game offensively in the first half. They were remarkable from the 3-point line," head coach Jerod Haase said. "They executed their game plan very well, and I congratulate them. We were very ineffectivein a lot of ways. Having C.J. (Washington) and Rod Rucker out, obviously we didn't have a full hand. We got in some foul trouble a bit, and that put us in some positions that were a little different."
Terrence Williams added 16 points for the 49ers. Shawn Lester scored 11 and Marcus Bryan and Ben Cherry had 10 apiece.
Charlotte jumped to a 17-7 lead early and had a 46-33 advantage at the break. The 49ers continued to play strong in the second half, extending their lead to 17 points, 60-43, with a Williams layup at 13:01 and to 23, 74-51, on a Willie Clayton bucket with 4:44 left. The Blazers came back to within 10 in the final seconds with 3-pointers by Thaddeus Rideau and Karl Morton, but it was not enough.
UAB finished the day hitting just 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from the free-throw line, including a 6-of-16 mark in the second half.
