UAB head coach Mike Anderson
On tonight's game:
"What a great college basketball game. That was Conference USA on display and two of its better teams playing. It was fought tooth and nail. We were very fortunate. That was a total team effort. When you look at how that game went, it was kind of like a slugfest. We just made more plays than Memphis did. I am proud of our guys and for our students."
On playing solid defense and switching up schemes:
I think our guys did a good job of communicating. We made the adjustments more than anything else. We aren't a predictable team. The one thing that we did different from the first time we played Memphis is that we rebounded. When we do that we have a chance."
On getting to the NCAA Tournament:
"I made this statement early in the year, we just have to play basketball. All that other stuff will take care of itself. I want our guys focused on the next game. I want our guys to control the things that we control."
On the possibility of looking past Saturday's game against Marshall:
"That's the thing you have to worry about. That's right where my mind went into, worrying from a coaching standpoint. It is very similar to before we played Memphis. We aren't that great of a team that we can just show up and win. We have to play with intensity and with energy and play together. That's our job (as a coaching staff) to make sure that doesn't happen. You have to watch out for that."
On gaining momentum:
"I think you want to have momentum. The only way to gain confidence is win games. We are playing a lot better defensive basketball, especially against a tough Memphis club. We made stops when we had to. I am sure it will give our guys some confidence."
Memphis head coach John Calipari
On UAB's performance:
"UAB played a terrific basketball game. They hustled us and beat us to balls. You're not going to win at the level both of these teams play where the other team gets every loose ball, every free ball. I have not seen us get that many balls jerked out of our hands all season."
On why UAB had the advantage:
"I attribute that to their pressure--they just kept coming after us. We had a couple of chances to do what we had to do to win the game. We don't shoot the ball particularly well. We had a chance--we were up ten, could have gone to fifteen, then all of sudden we were down by six at the half."
On UAB's zone defense:
"UAB played a great ball game and Mike did a heck of job with his team. The zone bothered us more than it should have. Our guard play was very tentative. I don't know why...we will have to go look at the tape and take a look at it. But, it was a heck of a basketball game."
