GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - East Carolina used a big second half run to defeat the UAB men's basketball team, 74-61, on Wednesday night at Minges Coliseum.
Trailing by four points, 49-45, at the 12:09 mark, ECU hit back-to-back 3s and expanded its lead to as large as 17 points with 8:34 left.
UAB (11-14, 3-7 C-USA) would not go quietly, clawing its way back into the contest, pulling within six after with under three minutes to play by using an 11-0 run and holding the Pirates scoreless for nearly five minutes.
However, ECU (14-9, 5-5) made its final eight foul shots to hold off the Blazers.
Rod Rucker was one rebound shy of a double-double, putting in a team-high 14 points and grabbing nine boards. Fahro Alihodzic chipped in with 11 points and Robert Williams produced a strong game with nine points, nine rebounds and four assits.
Maurice Kemp scored 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting and made 8 of 8 free-throw attempts for the Pirates, which had dropped three of their past four. Akeem Richmond added 15 points, Ty Armstrong 12 and Miguel Paul 11 with 11 assists.
UAB returns to the hardwood on Saturday by hosting the Rice Owls at 7 p.m. CT inside Bartow Arena.
