MIAMI, Fla. ---- FIU overcame a five-point halftime deficit and stormed out on an 11-2 run to begin the second period en route to a 78-73 win against the UAB men’s basketball team on Thursday.
The Blazers move to 14-8 overall and 3-5 in Conference USA, while FIU snaps a two-game losing skid to improve to 12-11, 4-4 in league play.
UAB fell to the Panthers despite a game-high 23 points from junior guard Chad Frazier. Frazier was one of three Blazers in double figures as C.J. Washington added 18 and Fahro Alihodzic scored 10 points on the night.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first 10 minutes of the game as the contest remained scoreless until Alihodzic scored the game’s first basket with 16:40 remaining in the opening stanza.
The score was tied on three occasions and changed leads eight times in the first 20 minutes. UAB was finally able to seize the early momentum with a 10-3 run to close out the half and take a 32-27 advantage into the locker room.
FIU countered to open the final period and stormed out on an 11-2 run to take a 38-34 lead over the Blazers. UAB’s Frazier answered the Panthers’ run with six-straight points to keep it close as FIU held a 40-39 advantage with 16:16 remaining.
The Blazers would battle back to take as much as a four point lead, 60-56 with 5:03 remaining, thanks to a 3-pointer from Frazier and a couple of fastbreak baskets from senior guard Robert Williams.
The Panthers countered with a final 8-2 run to take control on their way to the 78-73 victory.
Next up, UAB makes the short trip from Miami to Boca Raton, Fla., to take on Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m. CT Saturday.
