Robert Ehsan enters his fourth season on the staff and second as associate head coach with the UAB men's basketball program. Ehsan came to Birmingham after spending the 2011-12 campaign as an assistant coach under Seth Greenburg at Virginia Tech.
Ehsan helped lead the Blazers back to the NCAA Tournament in just his third year at UAB. In 2015, the Blazers captured the Conference USA Tournament crown and joined the 68-team field in the Big Dance.
The Blazers made shockwaves in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, as the 14th-seeded Blazers knocked off No. 3 seed Iowa State, 60-59, to advance to the NCAA Round of 32. During the exciting postseason run, the Blazers were led by junior guard Robert Brown, who was recruited by Ehsan at Virginia Tech before transferring to rejoin him at UAB. Brown averaged 18 points per game during the 2015 postseason run and was UAB's leading scorer, averaging 13.7 ppg last season.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to be at a place with a rich basketball tradition like UAB," Ehsan said. "This is certainly a great opportunity and one where I feel we can build on the great tradition that has already been instilled. I am equally excited to have the chance to work for Jerod Haase, who is someone I've gotten to know over the past four years and have built a great relationship with. There is no doubt that we have all the pieces to be a successful program and I am looking forward to get to know the student-athletes, fans, community and university."
Prior to his time with the Hokies, Ehsan spent six seasons under Gary Williams at Maryland and was an assistant coach his final three seasons (2008-11) after serving as the assistant recruiting director for one year (2007-08) and a graduate assistant for two years (2005-07).
While with the Terrapins, Ehsan was instrumental in the recruiting of two Top 25 recruiting classes in 2009 and 2010 and worked closely the past few years with the development of All-ACC player Jordan Williams and 2010 ACC Player of the Year Greivis Vasquez.
Over six seasons at Maryland, Ehsan was very involved with many aspects of the program including, recruiting, academics, scouting, scheduling, fundraising, and player development.
"I am very excited to have Rob on our staff," Haase said. "He is a rising star in this business, a natural recruiter and a dynamic person who can really connect with a wide range of people. On the court, he has a great deal of energy and knowledge about the game. He was a college player himself and someone who I think is a perfect fit here at UAB."
Ehsan played four seasons at the University of California, Davis. He started his last two seasons for the Aggies and was the team captain in his senior year. Ehsan finished 23rd in the nation in free-throw percentage as a junior for UC Davis, which was in a transition period while moving from NCAA Division II to Division I. At UC Davis, Ehsan received the Gordon S. Baranco Award, symbolizing exceptional leadership, unselfishness, work ethic and commitment towards the team.
He earned a bachelor's degree in economics while at UC Davis, making the athletics honor roll from 2002 through 2005. Ehsan completed a master's of business administration from UMUC in April 2008. Ehsan is a native of Sacramento, Calif. Ehsan is married to the former Lindsey Rattray and has one daughter, Katelyn (1).
