During his previous four years, DeNeen has been instrumental in the development of five former Blazers who have continued professional careers in the NBA and oversees. In addition, Walter Sharpe (drafted 32nd overall in the 2007 NBA Draft) and Robert Vaden (drafted 54th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft) mark the sixth and seventh times a player that DeNeen has coached was drafted by an NBA team, including three first round picks. Overall, 10 of DeNeen's former players have gone on to play in the NBA.
DeNeen worked with former standout and 2011 C-USA Player of the Year Aaron Johnson throughout his four-year career at UAB. It marked the eighth time in DeNeen's coaching career that he has trained an eventual basketball conference player of the year.
With DeNeen's help, the Blazers boast a 92-41 (.692) overall record during his four seasons working with the team in the weightroom and conditioning. With his help, the Blazers have made four-straight postseason appearances (1 NCAA & 3 NIT). The 2010-11 season marked the 16th time in DeNeen's career that he has been the strength coach for a men's or women's basketball team that has reached postseason play.
DeNeen came to UAB from Florida International where he spent a total of 13 years as a head strength and conditioning coach for FIU's 17 varsity sports. DeNeen was with the Golden Panthers from 1991-94 and 1997-2007.
In between his years at FIU, DeNeen was the top assistant strength coach at Cal-Berkeley, with direct responsibility for the football, men's basketball and softball programs. While with the Golden Bears football team, DeNeen was the strength coach for numerous NFL draft picks, including five first round selections and three second round selections.
As head strength coach for Cal's nationally ranked men's basketball team, DeNeen coached seven players that went on to play in the NBA, including 1996 PAC-10 Player of the Year and scoring champion Shareef Abdur-Rahim and 1997 PAC-10 Player of the Year and scoring champion Ed Gray.
In addition to DeNeen's collegiate experience, he has worked with and trained many professional athletes. His clientele includes MLB players Alex Rodriguez, Raul Ibanez, Mike Lowell, Jose Cruz, Jr. and Alex Gonzalez; NBA players Abdur-Rahim, Mark Strickland, Raja Bell, Jamal Mashburn, Carlos Arroyo, P.J. Brown and Joe Smith; and the NFL's Tony Gonzalez, among many others.
DeNeen received his B.S. in microbiology from USF in 1991, and earned a master's from FIU in 1994. He has been a certified strength and conditioning specialist (C.S.C.S.) for 18 years.
