BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team announced the recent signing of Andrew Dennis to a National Letter of Intent to join the Blazers for the 2014 season.
Dennis, a native of Huntsville, Ala., is currently a student-athlete at Wallace State Hanceville and will transfer to UAB following the academic year.
“Obviously in losing Harry Clark and Jacob German (our top two catchers) to graduation, a top priority in this recruiting class was to bring in two catchers,” head coach Brian Shoop said. “We believe that Andrew is the best junior college catcher in the state of Alabama, so we are thrilled to add him to our baseball family.”
Last spring, Dennis was the starting backstop at Wallace State Hanceville, where he led the team in hitting with a .368 batting average and knocked in 24 runs. Dennis helped lead the Lions to a runner-up finish in the junior college state tournament.
“We have known about Andrew since his high school career where he played for Mark Mincher at Huntsville High School,” Shoop said. “He was an all-state catcher there in leading the Crimson Panthers to a state championship. We have followed Andrew in his junior college career playing for Randy Putman at Wallace Hanceville and he has gotten better every year. We are extremely confident that he is ready to direct a pitching staff and hit at a high level at the Division I level.”
Prior to playing baseball at the junior college level, Dennis played three years on the Huntsville High School varsity team. In his junior senior, the catcher hit .397 with 11 homers and 45 RBI, while earning First Team All-City and All-State honorable mention accolades.
His senior season at Huntsville HS was even more impressive, setting school records in homers (18) and RBI (50) along with a .364 hitting clip. Dennis showcased his versatility, catching along with serving as the team’s closer, posting a 4-0 record on the mound. In his final season at Huntsville HS, Dennis was named Player of the Year and First Team All-State.
“Andrew is a physical presence with power potential at the plate and he moves very well behind the plate for a big man,” Shoop said. “He throws much like Jacob German who may be the best thrower in C-USA right now. The last catcher I coached from Huntsville High School was Graham Burgess and he led our Birmingham-Southern team to a national championship. The last player we had from Wallace Hanceville was Ryan Keedy, one of the best hitters to ever play at UAB. So we are obviously excited about all that Andrew brings to the table as a student-athlete.”
In addition to his junior college and high school playing days, Dennis played for the Viper Baseball Academy, 17U East Cobb Astros and legion ball for Decatur Post 15.
“Andrew also brings a lot of leadership to the field which is important as a catcher who you count on to serve as an on the field leader,” Shoop said. “He is from another great family with strong values so expect Andrew to be an excellent role model both on and off the field.”
