BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball program recently announced the signing of infielder Tim Anderson to a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Blazers in 2014.
Anderson, a native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., is currently enrolled at East Central CC (Mississippi) and will transfer after the 2012-13 academic year. He played at Hillcrest High School and following graduation, enrolled in junior college.
Head coach Brian Shoop feels that Anderson’s speed is a difference maker and will follow the footsteps of past speedy Blazers on the base paths in Jamal Austin (2008-10) and Brint Hardy (2007-09). Austin finished his career 74-for-88 on stolen base attempts, while Hardy led the nation in swipes during the 2009 regular season with 46 and was only caught three times.
“Tim is an incredible sign for our program,” head coach Brian Shoop said. “First off he is a great person along with being what we believe is one of the better players from the state of Alabama. His plus running speed will fit perfectly into how we like to play, but Tim is more than a speed guy. He has the ability to hit in the middle of our lineup as well.”
Anderson showcased his speed at East Central CC, going a perfect 30-for-30 on the base paths last spring. His stolen base total ranked in the top-15 amongst junior college players in the country.
In addition, Anderson hit .360 and launched four homers and knocked in 37 runs in 45 games as an ECCC Warrior.
This past summer, Anderson played for the Dodge City Athletics in the Jayhawk League where his rated the No. 2 prospect in the conference by Baseball American and Perfect Game.
As a member of the Athletics, Anderson hit .352, connecting for eight homers, 14 doubles, knocked in 39 runs and was 32-for-39 on stolen bases en route to earning first team all-league accolades.
“He is a great athlete who led his high school basketball team to a state championship as their point guard and leader,” Shoop said. “Now that he is focusing totally on baseball he has blossomed into a true professional prospect who has a chance to play in the big leagues one day. We are excited to help Tim progress towards his goal of playing professional baseball after his time at UAB.”
Anderson also earned first-team all-state honors at Hillcrest HS and was named a first-team all-state and all-region pick while at ECCC.
“Tim is well schooled having played for Todd Agee at Tuscaloosa Hillcrest High School and has continued to develop his baseball skills under Neil Holliman who has don a remarkable job at East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss.,” Shoop said.
