BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Colin McMurry, a left-handed pitcher from Athens, Ala., has committed to play baseball at UAB as announced by Blazer head coach Brian Shoop Friday. McMurry held a 1.97 ERA and recorded 69 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched in 2007.
"We are all pleased that Colin McMurry has chosen to attend UAB and play college baseball in a Blazer uniform," Shoop said. "He continues our commitment to improve on the mound and especially in adding quality left handers. Colin is a strike thrower as evidenced by his outstanding 5-1 strikeout to walk ratio. We are trying to add pitchers who will command the strike zone. We believe Colin has the potential to develop into an outstanding college pitcher."
McMurry, who plays scholastically for Athens High School under head coach Thad Prater, was selected as Decatur Daily First Team All-Area for the North Alabama Region and was chosen for the Alabama High School Coaches Association Top-100 Showcase.
As a junior, he coupled his 69 strikeouts with just 12 walks, while also allowing just 31 hits and 15 earned runs.
Off the field, McMurry is a superior student and is a member of the National Honor Society and National Beta Club, while also serving on his school's Student Council.
"Colin is exactly what we are looking for as a young man," Shoop said. "He is a 4.0 student who will excel in the classroom. Everyone we talked to had only great things to say about him as a person. He has a strong family, a good work ethic and is just a great young man."
McMurry is the son of Russ and Lisa McMurry.
