BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Garrett Peek of Gulf Breeze, Fla. has signed with the UAB baseball team for the 2015 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Friday. Peek is the third player to sign with the UAB baseball team, joining Brett Blackwood and Blake Johnson.
"We are losing some key guys on the mound this year, so adding quality pitching was a priority,” said Shoop. “Garrett is a big, strong, 6-4 athlete who currently throws mid to upper 80s and will throw 90 and higher in his college career. He already has a breaking ball that will play at the Division I level, which should give him a chance to pitch early in his UAB career."
Peek pitched in the 2013 FHSAA regional final and was a top prospect at the Under Armour Preseason All-American Tournament. He will be a three-year letterwinner after his senior season and holds a career ERA of under 3.00.
“Garrett has played at a high level, both for Gulf Breeze High School, home of former Blazer Phillip Bell, where he played for Randy Renfroe and in the summer for the East Coast Grays where he was mentored by Chris Snusz,” added Shoop. “Garrett will be well prepared for Conference USA Baseball. He has a tremendous upside and we couldn't be happier to welcome Garrett to our baseball family."
In the classroom, Peek excels, as well. The pitcher owns a 4.6 weighted GPA and ranks in the top 10 percent of his graduating class. In addition, he is a member of the National Honor Society and is a three-time winner of the baseball academic award.
“Garrett is obviously an incredible student who wants to go through our pre-med program at UAB, so this is a perfect fit for him academically,” stated Shoop. “We are excited to bring another outstanding student and person to our campus.”
