BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Thomas Lowery from Pelham High School to a national letter of intent to play for the Blazers in 2014.
"We are thrilled to add Thomas Lowery to our pitching staff for the 2014 team," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We have thought for years that he was the best pitcher in the Birmingham area. Thomas is a bulldog, extremely competitive and obviously extremely successful. He has the ability to throw three pitches for strikes and has been a winner all of his life."
Lowery, a native of nearby Pelham, Ala., had a standout season on the mound during his junior campaign. The lefty compiled an 8-1 record and posted the lowest ERA in Pelham HS history at 0.83. He fired four shutouts and totaled 93 strikeouts on the mound en route to earning a number of accolades.
The then junior was named both Birmingham Metro and Shelby County Pitcher of the Year, along with being named an all-state selection. He was also named an Alabama Baseball Coaches Association top-100 prospect as both a sophomore and junior.
Lowery, who has pitched for Pelham since his freshman year, tallied a 16-strikeout performance as a sophomore in 2011. He was coached by UAB alum Jeff Mauldin and is currently led on the field by Sean Anderson at Pelham.
The left-hander also played summer baseball for Excel Baseball under coaches Josh Beshears, Steve Gendron and Matthew Maniscalco.
Not only has Lowery excelled on the mound, but also in the classroom, where he has maintained a 3.6 GPA and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta.
"Thomas comes from a great family with two sisters and is the only son of Tommy and Michelle Lowery," Shoop said. "He will be a great addition to UAB and our baseball program."
