BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Brett Blackwood of Hartselle, Ala. has signed his National Letter of Intent and will join the UAB baseball team for the 2015 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Thursday. An All-American as a junior, Blackwood is the second player to sign with UAB, joining Blake Johnson.

“We are obviously thrilled that Brett Blackwood has decided to play his college baseball at UAB,” said Shoop. “To set the all-time single season hits record is amazing in itself, but to do it with the new BB Core bat is incredible. Offense is way down in college baseball, so quality high school hitters are at a premium. We fully believe Brett will hit at the college level and will do so very early in his college career.”

Last season, Blackwood clubbed for an average of .488, 18 home runs, 26 doubles, and 78 RBI as a member of the Hartselle High School team. As previously stated, Blackwood registered 103 hits, an AHSAA single-season record. For his efforts in 2013, he was named First Team All-State, MaxPreps Underclassmen Junior All-America, and First Team MaxPreps All-America. He was also recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the Alabama 5A State Championship and Alabama 5A Hitter of the Year.

“Brett is a winner in every sense of the word,” added Shoop. “He plays for the legendary William Booth, who has won almost every year at Hartselle, so Brett brings a winning attitude and mentality to our program that is exciting to have. Brett is also a winner in the classroom, having made almost all A’s in his high school career. He will be committed to excelling in the classroom which has become a hallmark of our baseball program at UAB.”

As a sophomore at Hartselle, Blackwood led his team to the state semifinals. He was recognized on the all-area and all-state honorable mention teams in 2012.

“We can’t wait for Brett to get on our campus next fall,” concluded Shoop. “We believe he will have an immediate impact on our program.”
