BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Blake Johnson of Phenix City, Ala. will join the UAB baseball team for the 2015 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Wednesday. Johnson, a shortstop, was named to the Alabama North-South All-Star Team in 2013.
“We first met Blake when he attended our high school camp with his Phenix City High School team,” said Shoop. “We were immediately interested in him athletically, academically and as a person. He is obviously a talented player as is evidenced by his high school and summer statistics. Blake is a talented high school shortstop who can defend the field, run the bases, and has hit for a high average in both high school and in summer baseball. Since the BB Core bat was introduced, defensive abilities and speed on the bases have become even more important in the college game. Those are both strengths for Blake and we know he will make our program better.”
Last season, Johnson held a .346 batting average, collected 31 RBI, hit 16 doubles, and stole 18 bases as a junior at Phenix City High School. He was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year, as well. Off the field, Johnson is a standout in the classroom, as well. He owns a 3.75 overall GPA and is in the top 10 percent of his graduating class.
“Blake is well coached,” added Shoop. “He played for both Chris Heaps and Roy Dixon in high school and under the tutelage of Brad Bouras in the summer. His advanced feel for the game will help his transition to Division I baseball.”
In the summer, Johnson clubbed for a .429 batting average, 12 RBI, and stole 12 bases as a member of Team Elite. In addition, the Phenix City, Ala. native was named to the 2013 Perfect Game 18U National Championship All-Tournament Team.
“Blake is another outstanding student who we expect to excel in the classroom and earn his UAB degree,” concluded Shoop. “He is also a great young man who fits the high character that we are looking for when we recruit. He is a great addition in every way to our baseball program and university and we could not be happier than to add Blake Johnson to this recruiting class.”
