BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team has continued where it left off with the 2014 season in summer baseball leagues across the nation. Eight players have stayed active during the summer months with their respective summer league squads.
Four members of the UAB baseball team are playing for the Lima Locos of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. Rising redshirt sophomore infielder Matthew Furuto has played in 25 of 26 games for the Locos. Furuto sports a .243 batting average with 17 hits and 19 runs scored. The Birmingham, Ala. native also has knocked five doubles and leads the team with 17 walks.
Rising redshirt senior infielder Matt Morse has played in seven contests for Lima. Morse is hitting at a .240 clip for the season. He has collected six hits, including two doubles, and two RBI.
Adam Smith has seen time in 15 games for Lima in 2014. The rising junior infielder is batting .170 with eight hits and six runs scored on the summer. He has four runs batted in, as well.
Rising redshirt junior right-handed pitcher James Naile is back on the mound after redshirting the 2014 season with UAB. Naile owns a 1-0 record and 0.00 ERA in five appearances on the hill. He has not allowed an earned run yet this summer and only given up four hits in 5.0 innings pitched. Naile also has one save on the season.
Rising senior outfielder Chase Davis is one of two Blazers currently playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues out in the California Collegiate League. Davis has played in 19 games and owns a .224 batting average. He has collected 13 hits, nine runs scored, nine RBI, and three stolen bases.
Mitch Williams joined Davis at San Luis. The rising junior catcher has seen action in 18 contests. He has a .217 batting average on 10 hits, including two doubles. Williams also has knocked in six runs for the Blues.
Holt Davis is playing for the Rochester Ridgemen in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The rising redshirt freshman catcher has seen time in 20 of 28 games, sporting a .203 batting average. Davis has tallied 12 hits, thus far, with two doubles and five runs batted in.
Rising redshirt sophomore infielder Jacob Armstrong made his return to the field on Monday, July 7 with the Woodstock River Bandits of the Valley League. Armstrong was 1-for-3 on the night. He is batting .190 for the season with three hits and four runs scored.
