BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former UAB right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard was named to the 2014 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-South Region Second Team, as announced on Wednesday afternoon. Mallard becomes the second player in program history to earn such accolades, joining Ryan Keedy.

Mallard had one of the most memorable seasons in program history in 2014. The senior right-handed pitcher owned a 9-3 record with a 1.55 ERA in 110 innings on the mound. The Cullman, Ala. native was the only pitcher in the country to record a quality start in each of his 14 starts during the regular season.

For his efforts on the hill, Mallard was named a 2014 Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-America Second Team honoree. He became the fourth All-American in school history and first to be recognized on the second team. Mallard also was named to the 2014 All-Conference USA First Team and the 2014 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year.

Earlier this month, the Toronto Blue Jays selected Mallard in the 14th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Mallard was the 414th overall pick and first Blazer to be selected in the MLB Draft since 2011. The right-handed pitcher was recently assigned to the Bluefield Blue Jays of the Appalachian League. Bluefield begins its season tomorrow against Johnson City.
