BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard of the UAB baseball team was named a semifinalist for the 2014 Gregg Olson Award presented by Toolshed Sports, as announced on Friday. The Gregg Olson Award is given to the breakout player of the year in collegiate baseball.
Mallard was one of 36 players to be named a semifinalist for the annual award. Finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6 and the winner will be announced during the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Earlier this week, Mallard was named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-America Second Team. The Cullman, Ala. native earned 2014 All-Conference USA First Team honors and was recognized as the 2014 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, as well.
Mallard sported a 9-3 record and 1.55 ERA for the 2014 season. The senior right-handed pitcher struck out 94, held opponents to a .191 batting average, and recorded two complete game shutouts. He was the only pitcher in the nation to register 14 quality starts in 14 starts during the regular season.
