2014 Conference USA Tournament Central

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team will open the 2014 Conference USA Tournament with a matchup against UTSA on Wednesday afternoon in Hattiesburg, Miss. The second-seeded Blazers will take on the seventh-seeded Roadrunners at 4 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.

The Conference USA Tournament features the top eight clubs in the 13-team league. The format is two double-elimination brackets with a single-elimination championship game set for Sunday, May 25. The championship contest will be televised on the CBS Sports Network at 1:00 p.m. CT, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Two years ago, the Green and Gold took home the crown as the No. 7 seed. UAB defeated No. 5 seed Memphis, 5-0, to win the 2012 Conference USA Tournament Championship. It marked the squad’s first C-USA Conference Tournament title and its fourth conference tournament championship in program history.

UAB is guaranteed at least two games in the conference tournament. In its next contest, UAB will take on either East Carolina or Southern Miss. The Green and Gold’s second contest will be played on Thursday.

Baseball Racks Up Conference USA Awards
Six members of the UAB baseball team earned postseason recognition by Conference USA, league officials announced on Tuesday. Four student-athletes earned All-Conference accolades, while three members of the team were honored with individual awards.

Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard became the first player in program history to earn Conference USA Pitcher of the Year honors. Head coach Brian Shoop earned his first Keith LeClair Coach of the Year honor and assistant coach Josh Hopper won the inaugural Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Mallard was named to the All-Conference USA First Team, becoming the first Blazer pitcher to do so. Junior outfielder Chase Davis and junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna were both recognized on the All-Conference USA Second Team. Freshman left-handed pitcher Thomas Lowery picked up C-USA All-Freshman Team accolades.

Prior to this season, UAB had only received one individual award in its time as a league member, as Dillon Napoleon was named the 2011 C-USA Newcomer of the Year. Four players earned All-Conference USA honors for the first time since 2011, as well.

Defy The Odds
The UAB baseball team entered the season at the bottom of many people’s Conference USA projections. In the Conference USA Preseason Poll, UAB was selected to finish in 11th place out of 13 teams by the league coaches. In addition, the squad did not have one person represented on the Preseason All-Conference Team.

UAB certainly defied the preseason expectations during the 2014 regular season. UAB finished in second place, three games behind regular-season champion Rice. The Blazers finished nine spots ahead of what they were predicted to.

In addition, UAB had three members of its squad recognized with individual awards from Conference USA, which led all league members. The Blazers also led the conference with three pitchers recognized on All-Conference USA teams.
