BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard of the No. 30 UAB baseball team was named to the 2014 Gregg Olson Award Watch List, as announced on Tuesday. The award honors college baseball’s breakout player of the year. Mallard was one of 80 players on the watch list.
Mallard is having one of the best seasons in collegiate baseball. Through 13 starts, Mallard owns a 9-1 record with a miniscule 1.12 ERA. He ranks sixth in the nation in ERA, 10th in WHIP (0.83), 11th in hits allowed per nine innings (5.53), and 15th in victories. Mallard owns a nation-best quality start streak of 15 consecutive starts.
His numbers are among the best in program history, as well. His 1.12 ERA would be the best mark in UAB history. Nine victories and two shutouts in a single season both rank second in program history. His 87 strikeouts are seventh in UAB history. In addition, his 2.59 career ERA is the best mark in program history and he recently became only the third Blazer to eclipse the 200-strikeout plateau.
The Cullman, Ala. native has racked up the awards in 2014. Mallard became the first player to win Conference USA Pitcher of the Week four times in a single season since 2006 Dick Howser Trophy winner Brad Lincoln. In addition, he was named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List and has taken home three different National Pitcher of the Week accolades in 2014.
Mallard and the Blazers take on Florida Atlantic in its final three-game series of the 2014 season. The series begins on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. CT.
