BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB junior right-handed pitcher Andre Parks (Luverne, Ala.) earned selection to the Conference USA second team that was announced today in New Orleans. The picks were made following a voting process that consisted of the league's head coaches, sports information directors and selected media.
Parks finished his second season with the Blazers by compiling a 5-1 record with a 2.83 earned run average. He threw 54 innings and allowed 19 runs (17 earned) on 40 hits and 36 walks with 38 strikeouts. He led the club in opponent's batting average by surrending a paltry .205.
During the campaign, Parks tallied a seven-inning shutout against Eastern Ilinois and blanked Louisville in a complete game - retiring the first 15 Cardinal batters he facedm in that contest. He also threw seven shutout innings in a combined shutout over Memphis, while also tallying victories over Alabama and Mississippi State during the year.
A two-time C-USA Pitcher of the Week in 2001, Parks had two of the team's three complete games on the year.
Tulane captured most of the individual awards as Jake Gautreau collected Player of the Year honors, while Michael Aubrey was named Freshman of the Year and Rick Jones Coach of the Year. Charlotte's John Maine was tabbed as the league's Pitcher of the Year.
The league will hold its postseason tournament at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., May 16-20 with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament the following week.
