BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 30 UAB baseball team will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for its final three-game series of the 2014 season as it takes on Conference USA-foe Florida Atlantic. The series kicks off on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. CT at the FAU Baseball Stadium. Friday’s contest is set to start at 5:30 p.m., while Saturday’s finale will be played at 10 a.m.
With the regular season concluding after the completion of Saturday’s games, postseason play draws near. The UAB baseball team is already guaranteed its best finish as a member of Conference USA, but the final weekend will settle the undecided.
UAB has already a clinched a berth to the 2014 Conference USA Championship in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Blazers can finish no lower than third place in the 13-team league and still have a shot at the conference title. If UAB sweeps Florida Atlantic and Rice drops two of three against Louisiana Tech, the Green and Gold would earn the outright regular season title. UAB could earn a share of the title as long as it earns one more win than Rice in the final weekend. The Blazers will clinch the second seed in the conference tournament with two wins in Boca Raton, Fla.
Junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna has been stellar all season for the Green and Gold. Luna currently leads Conference USA in doubles allowed (4) and ranks third in ERA (1.41) and earned runs allowed (13). The Huntsville, Ala. native also ranks 18th in the nation in ERA.
In his last two outings, Luna has allowed one unearned run, scattered seven hits, struck out nine, and walked three. Luna has not surrendered an earned run in 13.1 innings on the hill.
The junior right-handed pitcher finished the month of March on a tear on the mound, as well. Luna did not allow a run over 17.1 innings of play and did not issue a walk in 20.1 innings of play. In addition, he combined with senior left-handed pitcher Turner Lee and sophomore right-handed pitcher Cory Eller to shutout No. 29 FIU on Saturday, March 29.
