BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 30 UAB baseball team will face in-state foe Auburn in its final mid-week contest of the 2014 season on Tuesday night on the road. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Plainsman Park.
Longest Win Streak Since 2005
UAB swept Tulane this past weekend to extend its current winning streak to 10 straight games. This marks the longest streak in program history since March 6-23, 2005. It also marks the sixth -ongest active streak in Division I baseball.
Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard registered a complete game two-hit shutout on Friday night to seal a 1-0 win for the Blazers. On Saturday afternoon, junior first baseman Jeff Schalk recorded a three-hit, three-RBI performance to fuel the Green and Gold to a 7-2 victory. In the series finale on Sunday, freshman left-handed pitcher Thomas Lowery threw 6.1 scoreless innings of relief as UAB secured a program-record ninth shutout of the season.
One For The Books
The UAB baseball team is having one of its best seasons in program history in 2014. Heading into the week, UAB owns a 34-16 record on the year. It marks the most wins the squad has had since 1995 and most victories under head coach Brian Shoop in his tenure at the Blazers’ helm. In addition, the team has set the program record for 19 conference wins and has guaranteed itself a top-three finish in Conference USA, its best finish as a league member.
One of the main reasons for UAB’s success has been its pitching. Its miniscule 2.61 team ERA ranks first in UAB history for a single season. Last season, the squad owned a 5.29 ERA and has made a 2.68 improvement over one season. In addition, its .227 opposing batting average is also the top mark in program history.
Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard, junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna, and redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Johnny Lieske are climbing the individual single-season charts, as well. Mallard’s 1.12 ERA and Luna’s 1.41 rank 1, 2 in program history for a single season. Lieske joins the duo at No. 10 on that list. Mallard also ranks second in club history with nine wins and two shutouts on the year. His 87 strikeouts are seventh in single-season history, too.
