Mallard On National Pitcher Of The Year Watch List
Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard of the UAB baseball team was named to the 2014 National Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List, the College Baseball Hall of Fame announced on Friday, April 25. Mallard was one of 47 pitchers to be named to the list.
The National Pitcher of the Year Award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate pitcher. Current Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg won the inaugural award in 2009.
Mallard is off to one of the best seasons in UAB baseball history. The Cullman, Ala. native owns a 7-1 record with a 1.11 ERA in 10 starts in 2014. He has a current streak of 13 consecutive quality starts, which is the longest streak in the country. Mallard, who has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week three times this season, ranks in the top 30 nationally in five individual pitching categories and leads the conference in opponent batting average (.165).
A 2014 Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honoree, Mallard is leaving his marks on the UAB baseball record book, as well. The senior right-handed pitcher owns the best career ERA (2.68) and ranks fourth in career strikeouts (192). In addition, he has appeared in 69 games in his collegiate career, which ranks sixth in program history.
