UAB Scouting Report
The Blazers will look to right the ship Tuesday night against the Samford Bulldogs, as UAB has dropped eight of its last nine games. After snapping a five-game skid against Alabama State last Wednesday, the Blazers dropped all three contests to Southern Miss over the weekend to fall to 17-28 on the season and 3-12 in C-USA action.
Alex Luna will get the nod for the Blazers and is coming off the best outing of his collegiate career. Luna fired a three-hit complete game shutout, facing the minimum 27 batters in a 7-0 victory over Alabama State last Wednesday. It marked the first victory of the season for the right-hander, as he struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed only two balls to reach outside the infield. Luna used 13 ground outs (including one double play), one pop up and had two base runners caught stealing in addition to the 10 punch outs to account for the 27 outs. He threw just 82 pitches, 59 for strikes, in the complete game effort.
SS/RHP Tanner Bryant produced at the plate last week, hitting .474 (9-for-19) with three runs scored, two doubles and two RBI. His strong week at the plate raised his overall batting average to .316 for the season, third best for the Blazers. In addition, 2B Tyler Hamby hit .333 (5-for-15) for the week with a pair of runs scored and doubles.
In Saturday's finale vs. Southern Miss, OF Jeff Schalk had a career-best day at the plate, going 4-for-4 at the dish.
Samford Scouting Report
Samford comes into Tuesday night's match-up with an overall record of 23-21 after splitting two games at Appalachian State over the weekend, with the Sunday finale cancelled due to heavy rains. In their lone midweek game last week, the Bulldogs fell at Troy 8-2.
Samford has utilized the long ball this season, connecting for 48 home runs as a squad, tied for the second-most in the NCAA. Christiaan Durdaller leads the Bulldogs, going yard 11 times this season, followed closely by Phillip Ervin with 10 round trippers.
As a team, the Bulldogs are hitting at a .299 clip and averaging 7.4 runs off 10.4 hits per contest. Along with their 48 home runs, the Bulldogs have also tallied 89 doubles and nine triples.
The Blazers will see southpaw Patrick McGavin get the start on the mound for Samford, in what will be a staff night for the Bulldogs. McGavin is 0-4 in 13 appearances this season with four starts and has recorded an ERA of 4.94 in those contests.
As a staff, Samford has a team ERA of 5.04 and has totaled 318 strikeouts and 177 walks in 387.1 total innings. Opponents are hitting .286 off Bulldog pitchers this season.
UAB leads the all-time series 53-23 but the Blazers have lost their last seven meetings against Samford, including dropping an 11-4 decision at Samford earlier this season.
April 9, 2013 - @Samford 11, UAB 4
In the only other meeting this season, Samford used three home runs to get past the Blazers 11-4 at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Chase Davis had a solid night at the plate for UAB, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. The Blazers pitching staff struggled throughout the night with Turner Lee turning in the best performance, allowing one run in three innings of work in relief of starter Cameron Rose. Samford's C.K. Irby finished the night two-for-three from the plate with a pair of home runs, four RBI, and two runs scored. Ervin also went deep for the Bulldogs.
