Second Sweep In Conference USA Play In 2014
The UAB baseball team swept Marshall this past weekend for its second sweep in Conference USA play in 2014. In addition, it marked the Blazers’ first sweep in conference play at home since April 27-29, 2012 against Houston.

In the series-opener on Friday, April 25, senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard recorded his seventh win of the year and 13th straight quality start in a 10-2 win. Mallard went 8.0 innings, allowed one earned run, scattered five hits, struck out nine, and walked one. On Saturday, April 26, junior infielder Nathan Vincent hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to seal the series for the Blazers. In the series finale on Sunday, April 27, redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum hit an inside the park grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to give UAB a 5-2 win.

Inside The Park
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum accomplished one of the rarest feats in baseball on Sunday, April 28 against Marshall. With the bases loaded, Gum hit deep fly ball to center field. Gum cleared the bases and came around himself for an inside the park grand slam.

It marked the first time a Blazer had hit a grand slam since Ryan Prinzing did so on May 3, 2013 against Rice. In addition, Gum became the first player in a Green and Gold uniform to knock in four runs in 2014.
