BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team will play its final three-game series at Regions Field in 2014 when it hosts Marshall beginning on Friday night. First pitch is slated for 6:30 on Friday. Saturday’s contest will begin at 2 p.m., while the series finale will start at 1 p.m.
Saturday afternoon’s game will be the Strike Out Cancer event. UAB has joined the fight against childhood cancer with the Vs. Cancer Foundation. One can support by making a donation at uab.vs-cancer.org. Proceeds will go directly to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer’s Pediatric Division and national childhood cancer research.
Let’s Turn Two
The UAB baseball team has excelled in the art of the double play in 2014. On the year, the Blazers have turned 43 double plays in the field. That mark leads Conference USA and ranks ninth in the nation.
In addition, the Green and Gold hold a .973 fielding percentage, which ranks fourth in the 13-team league and 46th in country. Sophomore infielder Adam Smith has been a defensive star up the middle for UAB, with 117 assists on the year. His 117 assists rank seventh in Conference USA.
Quality Start To 2014
As of Monday, April 21, senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard is one of four players in the nation to have 10 quality starts in their first 10 starts of the 2014 season. A quality start is defined as a game in which a starting pitcher goes at least 6.0 innings and permits no more than three earned runs. Dating back to 2013, Mallard has had a quality start in 12 consecutive starts, the longest active streak in the country.
Mallard went at least 7.0 innings in each of his eight starts in 2014. The Cullman, Ala. native went 16.0 consecutive innings without surrendering a hit and 26.0 frames without allowing a run, earlier in the year. Mallard owns a 6-1 record and 1.11 ERA on the year. He owns a .164 opposing batting average, which leads Conference USA.
