Baseball Hosts Two Mid-Week Contests

Junior first baseman Jeff Schalk is on a seven-game hitting streak.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team will host Alabama State in the first of two mid-week contests at Regions Field. UAB takes on Alabama State on Tuesday, before playing No. 8 Alabama on Wednesday night. Both games are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday night’s contest will be the Strike Out Cancer event, as well. UAB has joined the fight against childhood cancer with the Vs. Cancer Foundation. One can support by making a donation at Proceeds will go directly to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer’s Pediatric Division and national childhood cancer research.

It’s Out Of Here
The UAB baseball team has clubbed five home runs in its last seven games. UAB hit three home runs on Friday, April 4 at Louisiana Tech and blasted two more on Sunday, April 13 against Southern Miss.

At Louisiana Tech, junior first baseman Jeff Schalk, sophomore infielder Evan Peterson, and sophomore catcher Mitch Williams all hit round-trippers. It marked the first time since March 30, 2013 at Marshall that the Blazers hit multiple home runs in a single game. In addition, UAB clubbed three home runs for the first time since April 8, 2012 at UCF. Peterson and Williams each hit their first home runs in a Green and Gold uniform on Friday night, as well.

In the series finale against Southern Miss, Schalk and redshirt sophomore Griffin Gum went yard at Young Memorial Field. It marked Schalk’s fourth home run of the year, his best in a single season in a Green and Gold uniform. Gum’s blast was his first in his collegiate career.
